What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting techniques, including take-downs, submissions, escapes, guards, sweeps, and guard passes. Originating from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, it was introduced to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 1900s and further developed by the Gracie family. Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ emphasizes controlling opponents on the ground and applying chokes or joint locks to neutralize threats
Each of our BJJ classes lasts one hour and is structured into three parts:
-
Warm-Up: Incorporating calisthenics, strength exercises, joint mobility, and stretching to prepare the body for training.
-
Technique Drilling: Focusing on learning and practicing specific BJJ techniques, such as escapes or submissions.
-
Live Sparring: Engaging in controlled sparring sessions where students apply techniques in real-time scenarios, promoting practical application and growth.
Most classes are conducted wearing the BJJ Gi, with No-Gi sessions typically held once a week, especially when not preparing for competitions.
Our Classes
Safety and Instruction
Under the guidance of Professor Rinaldo Santos, a 6th Degree Black Belt with over two decades of teaching experience, we prioritize safety and effective learning. Professor Rinaldo has been instructing men, women, and children in BJJ for over 20 years, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students.
To train at our academy, students need a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi, mouthpiece, and athletic cup. While knee pads are optional, they are recommended for additional protection. Investing in a quality Gi is advisable, as it can last many years with proper care. Students with existing Gis are welcome to use them, provided they add the Carlson Gracie Central Florida patch to the back.

Student Ranking
We utilize a traditional belt system to rank students, beginning with a white belt and progressing through various colors, with the black belt as a common goal. Children and adults have distinct belt progression systems, reflecting their developmental stages. Belts are awarded based on skill, not merely the number of classes attended, and ceremonies are held annually. Achieving a black belt typically takes between 7-10 years.
